Dates checked 23 October 2026. Every date below comes from the organiser's or federation's own website on that day. Events get moved, cancelled or re-scheduled, so check the official link before you book transport, accommodation or staff. Where we couldn't find a confirmed date on an official page, we've said so instead of guessing.
Summer is one of the busiest stretches of the year for horse people in both countries. The spring racing carnivals roll into yearling-sale season, the major jumping and dressage championships land before Christmas, polo heads to the beach and the parks, and the New Zealand showing season builds to its national titles in March.
This calendar covers the period from the Melbourne Cup Carnival (it opens on the last day of October) to the end of March 2027. It's written for competitors and spectators, and also for the people who keep those horses on the road: farriers, transporters, agistment hosts, grooms and vets, whose busiest weeks follow the same dates.
How we built this list
We only included an event if its 2026–27 dates were published on an official organiser, club, sale company or federation page when we checked. If we couldn't confirm a date, the event goes in the "date TBC" table further down with the last official information we found.
That rule cost us a few events. One website advertising a three-day event in Adelaide in November 2026 didn't match Equestrian Australia's records, so we left it out completely. EQUITANA Melbourne isn't on this list either, because we couldn't find a current official date for it.
Confirmed events, November 2026 to March 2027
Dates are local time. "Racing" means thoroughbred racing unless it says harness.

Racing carnivals
The Victoria Racing Club lists four Flemington days for the 2026 carnival: Derby Day on Saturday 31 October, Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November, Oaks Day on Thursday 5 November and Champions Stakes Day on Saturday 7 November [1].
Across the Tasman, Christchurch hosts two codes in the same week. Riccarton Park races on 7, 11 and 14 November [2], and the New Zealand Trotting Cup is at Addington on Tuesday 10 November, with Show Day racing on Friday 13 November [3].
Racing heads to Queensland in January. Magic Millions lists the Gold twilight meeting on Saturday 9 January and the TAB Magic Millions Raceday on Saturday 16 January 2027, both at the Gold Coast Turf Club [8]. Auckland's Karaka Millions Raceday is on Saturday 23 January at Ellerslie [10]. The Australian Turf Club's 2026–27 fixture card puts TAB Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday 20 March 2027 [15].
Yearling sales season
For studs, consignors and transport operators, the summer sale calendar matters even more than the racing. The published 2027 dates are:
- Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, 12–17 January, then the Tasmanian (15 February), Perth (18–19 February), Adelaide (14–15 March) and Gold Coast March (22–23 March) yearling sales [9].
- NZB National Yearling Sales at Karaka: Book 1 on 24–25 January, Book 2 on 26 January and the Summer Sale on 28 January [10].
- Inglis Classic Yearling Sale at Riverside Stables, 7–9 February [11], and the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale at Oaklands Junction, 28 February to 2 March [12].
Sales weeks bring a wave of horse movements, both before the sale (yearlings into the complex) and after (yearlings heading to their new trainers or pre-trainers). If you transport, prep or agist young horses, those are the weeks to plan around.
Jumping, dressage, polo and showing
Show jumping. The Australian Jumping Championships are at Boneo Park in Victoria from 2 to 6 December 2026 [6].
Dressage. Equestrian Australia's major dressage events calendar (last updated 2 February 2026) lists the SA State Dressage Championships on 7–8 November 2026, and the Victorian Dressage Championships and Dressage Festival, including a CDI3*, at Werribee on 10–13 December 2026 [4]. Because that calendar was published early in the year, confirm the details with the organising committee before you enter or book a truck.
Polo. The F3 Polo series lists Centennial Park, Sydney, on 14 November 2026, Portsea Polo at Point Nepean on Saturday 13 February 2027, Christchurch on 20 February and Auckland on 6 March [5]. Magic Millions pairs polo with show jumping at its Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo and Showjumping day at Doug Jennings Park on the Gold Coast on Sunday 10 January 2027 [7].
Shows and showing. The Royal Canberra Show runs from 19 to 21 February 2027 at EPIC [13]. In New Zealand, the RASNZ Showing Titles are at Tōmoana Showgrounds, Hastings, from 3 to 6 March 2027. RAS NZ says the qualification window runs from 24 February 2026 to 23 February 2027, and the full schedule will be released by November 2026 [14].
Dates still to be confirmed
These events matter to plenty of horse people, but we couldn't find a confirmed 2026–27 date on an official page when we checked.
| Event | Usual timing | Last official information | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horse of the Year Show (NZ) | Usually March, date TBC | Equestrian Sports New Zealand announced the 2026 show was cancelled because of economic pressures. We found no confirmed 2027 date. | ESNZ [16] |
| Adelaide Equestrian Festival | Usually April (outside this calendar), date TBC | The 2026 festival ran 16–19 April 2026. | Equestrian Australia |
| EQUITANA Melbourne | Date TBC | We found no current official event date. | — |
If you organise one of these events and have a confirmed date, let us know and we'll add it.
Planning your season if you run a horse service business
A national event calendar doubles as a demand forecast. Here's how different operators can use it.
Horse transport
Sales and carnival weeks bring the most bookings and the least flexibility. Before each one:
- block the days on your calendar and put your sale or carnival rates, minimums and cancellation terms in writing
- ask regular clients now when their horses need to arrive and leave, so you can group loads
- allow for heat and plan rest and water stops for summer trips (our long-distance floating guide covers the basics)
- use the transport cost calculator to check your quotes against fuel and time
Owners looking for a truck can search the horse transport directory, including Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and New Zealand. If you're an operator, our article on getting clients for a horse transport business has more on filling those busy weeks.
Farriers
Competition horses usually need shoeing a few days before a major event, not the morning of it. Count back from the big dates in your area, such as the jumping championships at Boneo or the Werribee dressage festival, and offer your competition clients a booking window. Keep a couple of slots free for lost shoes during event weeks. Clients can find farriers in the farriers directory, including Victoria and New Zealand.
Agistment, short stays and spelling
Big events and sales create short-term demand for paddocks and stables near the venue, and for spelling after a long campaign. If you can take short stays, update your vacancy list and your listing before December. Our agistment directory has pages for Victoria, New South Wales and New Zealand. Put short-stay terms in writing, too; the agistment agreement checklist is a good place to start.
Grooms, clipping, vets and physios
Grooming and clipping, equine physio and vet bookings all cluster before events. Publish your availability early, and say clearly whether you travel to venues. You'll find directory pages for grooming and clipping, equine vets and equine physios.
Venues and clubs
If you run a venue or club, check the confirmed dates above before you lock in your own summer fixtures so you don't clash with a major championship in your region. You can list your venue in the venues directory or your club in clubs and associations.
Summer travel reminders
Most of these events fall in the hottest months of the year, and parts of both countries will be in bushfire season. Plan around the heat: travel in the cooler parts of the day, carry plenty of water, and have a backup plan if the fire danger rating is extreme or catastrophic on a travel day. Our summer horse care guide and bushfire planning for horse businesses cover both in more detail.
Event planning checklist
- Check the official event or sale page for date changes before booking anything
- Book transport early for sale and carnival weeks, and confirm pick-up and drop-off times in writing
- Schedule farrier visits a few days before competition
- Check entry closing dates and qualification windows (for example the RASNZ Showing Titles window closes 23 February 2027)
- Carry your horse's health and vaccination records; the horse health record can keep them in one place
- Plan water, shade and rest stops for summer travel
- Have a fire-danger-day backup plan for travel and for horses left at home
- If you run a service business, update your listing and availability before December
