About
Harness Education and Rehoming Opportunities, known as HERO, is a Harness Racing New Zealand initiative based in Addington, Christchurch. The programme is dedicated to promoting life after racing by retraining and rehoming retired Standardbred racehorses throughout New Zealand. Working with experienced educators, HERO provides transition schooling to prepare Standardbreds for second careers as pleasure mounts, companions, and sport horses. Graduates transition into diverse equestrian pursuits such as showing, show jumping, eventing, endurance, competitive trail riding, cowboy challenge, and pleasure trekking. The team matches retrained horses with suitable long term owners and offers ongoing support to ensure successful partnerships. Through structured re-education and dedicated placement services in Canterbury and across the country, the organisation showcases the versatility of Standardbreds beyond the racetrack.
