Equine Welfare NZ, formerly known as Rodney Animal Rescue, is a national registered charitable trust originally established in the Rodney area of the Auckland region. Founded in 2020 by veterinary nurse Alice Hayward, the charity provides horse welfare assistance, owner education, rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming services across New Zealand. The organisation operates through a nationwide network of volunteer foster carers, equine professionals, and industry partners without paid staff. Horses entering care receive veterinary treatment, farrier attention, dental work, and tailored nutritional programs before being placed into foster care or rehomed through long-term leases and adoptions, complete with a lifelong safety net. Equine Welfare NZ also focuses heavily on early intervention, offering confidential advice and support to horse owners experiencing difficulties before welfare challenges develop into an emergency.
