About
Founded in 1969, Kowhai Residential School of Riding is located approximately 45 minutes from Christchurch and ten minutes outside Oxford. The centre maintains more than 70 schooled horses and ponies, offering weekend and school holiday riding courses supported by transport shuttles from Christchurch. Weekend morning group lessons involve students directly in horse care, including catching, grooming, saddling, and post-ride tack cleaning. Riders can also participate in full-day weekend programs that combine flatwork instruction with an afternoon farm trek. Midweek private lessons run from Tuesday to Friday, catering to complete beginners through to advanced competitors in dressage, showjumping, and cross country. Additionally, instructors travel on Thursdays to provide private coaching at client properties throughout Rangiora, Fernside, Ohoka, Cust, and surrounding districts.
